Dr. Nicolas Kokoris...Surgeon
Born: Athens, Greece
Departing soon for the Congo

I hadn't thought about the what ifs of relocating to San Francisco when I made the move from Greece, it'd been little more than an impulse born by the need to see Rae for more than the two weeks per year we had been allowing ourselves. Had I taken time to think about things beforehand I would have realized that there would be no guarantee that she would leave her husband to be with me. There was in fact no guarantee that what we considered our relationship was more than a need for intimacy, a means to find release from the daily stress our two week per year tour in "Doctors Without Borders" brought to us. Once I arrived in San Francisco I discovered it wasn't easy to look at her and know that we were forced to keep the real truth behind our pasts a secret, and while I tried to play the game for her sake, I knew that I hated every false word that left my mouth.
I'm not sure when I decided it was time to let her go, to accept that what we had was not something that could be reclaimed anywhere else. I can't even say there was one specific moment that allowed me to realize that what we had was best left among the dangers and horrors of war. To finally accept that what we had was no more.
I've moved on now, not back to Greece, but on to, of all places the Congo. I've accepted a full-time position with Medecins Sans Frontieres. I think I need this as much as they need my services, a chance to practice medicine again without the politics that too often accompany them. This posting has one other benefit to it, it's a chance to work once more with an old friend and collegue, Joanna Falconiri. Time has brought changes to both of us, the future will determine what we do with them.
